Out of a Winnipeg suburb comes three young people with a penchant for melody and fun. 20 Pound Shovel is here to remind people that music isn't about hardcore cliche and bad relationships. 20 Pound Shovel formed in 2003 in a garage located in Sainte Anne Manitoba where they crafted catchy pop songs for over a year before heading to Michael Daher (Pushing Daisies, Floor Thirteen) to record their demo. The product was a fast paced 13 song blasted with catchy guitar hooks and vocal melodies. The demo was recorded in two days for $100 recalls frontman Jay Voth. "We had no money, he just did it out of complete faith in us." After a string of shows sponsored my Teens Against Drunk Driving and Mitch Dorge (Crash Test Dummies) 20 Pound Shovel landed a deal with local imprint Criminal Records. In 2005 Criminal Records released "A New Beginning". "We wanted to do things our own way and not have someone telling us what to do with our music" says Jay, who single handedly wrote all the songs on "A New Beginning" except for the notable ballad "Puzzle Of Your Life" in which Matt Voth wrote and composed. In the summer of 2006, 20 Pound Shovel took time off to write and demo brand new songs. After a summer of writing and practicing they went back to Michael Daher to produce what is the high anticipated follow up "The Act Your Age EP", released September 7th 2007.
